On adventurous trails participants use Land Cruiser 70 safari version which were especially designed for demanding terrain. With these vehicles participants discover glaciers, desserts and lava fields but also other main attractions in Iceland, like National Park Thingvellir, the Geysir area and Gullfoss waterfall.

 

Day 1:

 

Golden Circle with a highland touch Golden Circle including the famous sights of National Park Thingvellir. North of there we will encounter the first rough terrain close to the mountain Hlodufell and turn into Linuvegur track close to Langjokull glacier. We visit the Geysir area with ever-spouting Strokkur and the majestic waterfall Gullfoss, and having seen these sights we make our way into the interior. We recommend stay overnight in the mountain huts of Kerlingarfjoll.

 

 

Day 2:

 

Kjolur route Skagafjordur Today´s route leads over the highland track Kjolur (4WD needed, track open from mid-June), driving through the colorful thermal area Hveravellir between the glaciers Langjokull and Hofsjokull. Travel to the horse-breeding valley of Skagafjordur fjord. Overnight in Skagafjordur.

 

 

 

Day 3:

 

Akureyri Myvatn Drive to Akureyri, the second largest town in Iceland outside the capital area. Stop at Godafoss waterfall before driving to the beautiful Lake Myvatn area. The natural wonders of Lake Myvatn area include the unique lava formations of Dimmuborgir, Krafla volcanic area, and the pseudo craters at Skutustadir. Overnight in Myvatn.

 

 

Day 4:

 

Myvatn Dettifoss Myvatn From Lake Myvatn you drive around Tjornes peninsula. Travel through the village of Husavik to Jokulargljufur National Park, including the impressive horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi canyon and Dettifoss, the mightiest waterfall in Europe. End at the lake again. Overnight in Myvatn.

 

 

 

Day 5:

 

Sprengisandur – Modrudalsoraefi We leave Laugafell behind and drive with our convoy onto the historic track Sprengisandur and down Bardardalur valley back to civilization. We will pass the beautiful lake Myvatn before coming to Modrudalsoraefi plateau where we find our accommodation at Modrudalur, Iceland´s highest farm over sea level. Overnight in Modrudalur.

 

 

Day 6:

 

Kverkfjoll We begin the day with a stop at Saenautasel a restored 19th century´s heath cottage and visit Laugavalladalur where we have the unique opportunity to take a natural shower in a geothermal waterfall. We visit the breathtaking canyons Hafrahvammagljufur close to the huge hydropower dam at Karahnukar before we venture towards the mountain range Kverkfjoll at the north eastern edge of glacier Vatnajokull, on the route Kreppulonsleid. Once there we have a hike to the ice cave and one night´s stay at the Kverkfjoll hut.

 

 

 

 

Day 7:

 

Askja and Southern Gaesavatnaleid We leave Kverkfjoll and take a hike to the Askja crater visiting oskjuvatn and those, who dare, take a warm bath in the crater of Viti (Hell). From there we take the rough trail Southern Gaesavatnaleid which leads us adventurously along the edge of Europe´s biggest glacier – Vatnajokull over the challenging „Flaeður“, the origin of the river Jokulsa á Fjollum again into Sprengisandur route. Here we stay overnight at the close-by hut Nyjidalur.

 

 

 

Day 8:

 

Thjorsardalur - Reykjavík Sprengisandur route down to Thjorsardalur where road number one takes us back towards Reykjavik, stopping on the way for beautiful sites like Gjain “The Gorge” and Hjalparfoss waterfall. We turn back to our vehicles and drive back into Reykjavik, were we end our tour. End of the Safari tour Iceland
